Baikal is the most voluminous freshwater lake in the world. Its water volume is 23,000 cubic-kilometers (22% of the world's fresh water). Baikal's unique ecosystem makes it home for more than 2,630 species of plants and animals, the greater part (two thirds) of which can be found nowhere else in the world. Taiga on Baikal shore.
