Komandorskiye (Commander) Islands is an archipelago of four islands in thje south-west part of the Bering Sea. They are part of the Aleutian Region of Russia's Kamchatka Territory. They were named after Commander Vitus Bering who opened them in 1741. These islands are a place where Russian and Aleutian cultures mix. They have a great potential for the development of northern tourism. The total square area of the archipelago is 1,848 square km. It is located on the border of the Pacific and Bering Sea, 200 km to the east from the Kamchatka peninsular, from which they are separated by the Kamchatka Strait.
