April 27, 2008. A Russian carrier rocket has delivered the second satellite for Europe's Galileo navigation system into orbit. The experimental satellite, Giove-B, was put into orbit by a Soyuz carrier rocket launched from the Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan in the early hours on Sunday. Giove-B will test key technologies for the Galileo system, including a passive maser clock and 3-channel transmission of navigation signals. Onboard instruments will also measure the radiation environment at the unique Galileo orbit height. Galileo will be Europe's own global navigation satellite system, providing highly accurate global positioning service under civilian control. The satellite was developed by the British company Surrey Satellite Technology Limited for the European Space Agency.
