St. Sophia Cathedral in Constantinople. 6th century. This Byzantine Christian church was built in 532-537 by architects Isidorus and Anthemius. In the 15th century, after the Turks seized Costantinople, the city was renamed Istanbul, while the temple was converted to a Muslim mosque [1453-1934]. In 1934, by decision of first Turkish president Kamal Ataturk, it was made a museum.
